First, let s look at the steering. Chevy has 20-inch wheels and comes with Goodyear Eagle street tires. Toyota steers well, with 18-inch comes with trail tires and has a smaller turning diameter than Chevy despite having the same-length wheelbase.

When the power of these two trucks was tested, the Tundra did better in straight-line running with 381-horsepower motor, shorter axle gears, 55-percent more transmission gears, and more torque over a wider powerband. On everything other than straight-line blasts, the Silverado won the slalom and figure-eight contests with its 315-horsepower motor.

While the Silverado has higher EPA ratings with the high-tech Active Fuel Management system, it doesn t offer the all-around benefits. Instead, Tundra transmission s extra gears gave it the fuel-economy edge against the Silverado.

For those more interested in the interior, the Tundra tends to feel bigger inside than the Silverado and the massive dash looks more like that of a heavy-duty. Chevy tends to go for the more luxury sedan look with the extended cab using dual-hinged rear swinging doors that now open nearly 170 degrees. For a night on the town Silverado seems to be the choice, while Tundra takes a more work-oriented approach.

So after all the comparisons, who is the real king of the Texas roads? Consumers will probably have to let the truck industry know when Tundra is officially released for sale in a few weeks.

Hummer brand keeps on expanding its lineup. After it released the smaller version of Hummer H3, several upgrades and enhancements followed. The production of Hummer 3 parts and vehicles started on October 10 this year at its Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa. Said production intended to cater to international markets.

With MSRP starting at $26,800, the base V6 powered and 6 speed manual tranny throws out 287 hp and will rocket you to 60 from a dead stop in just under 6 seconds. Along with the manual tranny, the "Z" comes equipped with ABS, 3.5L 24-valve V6, CD, etc. The base model is pretty basic, but you can get more horses and more options, including a convertible for about 10 grand more. Check around for after market Nissan parts that you can get for your "Z" too.

Formula 1 - A History To 1980

The Formula One series has its roots in the European Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s and 1930s. However, the true history of Formula One began in 1946 with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile's (FIA's) standardisation of rules. A World Drivers' Championship followed in 1950.

Although the world championship has always been the main focus of the category, non-championship Formula One races were held for many years. Due to the rising cost of competition, the last of these occurred in 1983.

National championships existed in South Africa and the UK in the 1960s and 1970s. After World War II, a new formula was initiated -- originally called Formula A but soon to be known as Formula 1 -- for cars of 1.5 litres supercharged and 4.5 litres unsupercharged. The minimum race distance was reduced from 311 miles to 186 miles, allowing the Monaco Grand Prix to be re-introduced after a two-year break in 1950.

The FIA announced plans for a World Championship at a meeting held that year. On 10 April 1950, Juan Manuel Fangio, in a Maserati, won the Pau Grand Prix, the first contest to be labeled an "International Formula One" race. A month later, Silverstone hosted the British Grand Prix, the first sanctioned championship race for Formula One Grand Prix cars, and the F1 World Championship was born.

The sport's title, Formula One, indicates that it is intended to be the most advanced and most competitive of the many racing formulae.

Formative years (1950-1980)

The first Formula One World Championship was won by Italian Giuseppe Farina in his Alfa Romeo in 1950, barely defeating his Argentine teammate Juan Manuel Fangio. However, Fangio won the title in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 & 1957, his streak interrupted by two-time champion Alberto Ascari of Ferrari. Although Britain's Stirling Moss was able to compete regularly, he was never able to win the World Championship, and is now widely considered to be the greatest driver never to have won the title. Fangio, however, is remembered for dominating Formula One's first decade and has long been considered the "grand master" of Formula One.

The first major technological development, Cooper's re-introduction of mid-engined cars (following Ferdinand Porsche's pioneering Auto Unions of the 1930s), which evolved from the company's successful Formula 3 designs, occurred in the 1950s. Jack Brabham, champion in 1959 and 1960, soon proved the new design's superiority. By 1961, all competitors had switched to mid-engined cars.

The first British World Champion was Mike Hawthorn, who drove a Ferrari to the title in 1958. However, when Colin Chapman entered F1 as a chassis designer and later founder of Team Lotus, British racing green came to dominate the field for the next decade. Between Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, and Denny Hulme, British teams and Commonwealth drivers won twelve world championships between 1962 and 1973. In 1962, Lotus introduced a car with an aluminium sheet monocoque chassis instead of the traditional spaceframe design. This proved to be the greatest technological breakthrough since the introduction of mid-engined cars. In 1968, Lotus painted Imperial Tobacco livery on their cars, thus introducing sponsorship to the sport.

Aerodynamic downforce slowly gained importance in car design from the appearance of aerofoils in the late 1960s. In the late 1970s Lotus introduced ground effect aerodynamics that provided enormous downforce and greatly increased cornering speeds (though the concept had previously been used on Jim Hall's Chaparral 2J in 1970). So great were the aerodynamic forces pressing the cars to the track, some cars did without springs in their suspension and substituted solid blocks of aluminium to minimize the change in ride height due to the drastic change in downforce from low speed to high speed, depending entirely on the tyres for any small amount of cushioning of the car and driver from any irregularities in the road surface.

The formation of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA) in 1979 set off the FISA-FOCA war, during which FISA and its president Jean Marie Balestre clashed repeatedly with the Formula One Constructors Association over television profits and technical regulations.

Rise in popularity (1981-2000)

1981 saw the signing of the first Concorde Agreement, a contract which bound the teams to compete until its expiration and assured them a share of the profits from the sale of television rights, bringing an end to the FISA-FOCA War and contributing to Bernie Ecclestone's eventual complete financial control of the sport, after much negotiation.

The FIA imposed a ban on ground effect aerodynamics in 1983. By then, however, turbocharged engines, which Renault had pioneered in 1977, were producing over 700 bhp (520 kW) and were essential to be competitive. In later years, notably 1986, the Formula One turbo cars produced in excess of 1,100 bhp (820 kW) in racing trim (and as much as 1,400 bhp / 1050 kW in qualifying trim). These cars were the most powerful open-wheel circuit racing cars ever. To reduce engine power output and thus speeds, the FIA limited fuel tank capacity in 1984 and boost pressures in 1988 before banning turbocharged engines completely in 1989.

In the early 1990s, teams started introducing electronic driver aids such as active suspension, semi-automatic gearboxes and traction control. Some were borrowed from contemporary road cars.[citation needed] Some, like active suspension, were primarily developed for the track and later made their way to the showroom. The FIA, due to complaints that technology was determining the outcome of races more than driver skill, banned many such aids for 1994. However, many observers felt that the ban on driver aids was a ban in name only as the FIA did not have the technology or the methods to eliminate these features from competition.

The teams signed a second Concorde Agreement in 1992 and a third in 1997, which is due to expire on the last day of 2007.

On the track, the McLaren and Williams teams dominated the 1980s and 1990s. Powered by Porsche, Honda, and Mercedes-Benz, McLaren won 16 championships (seven constructors', nine drivers') in that period, while Williams used engines from Ford, Honda, and Renault to also win 16 titles (nine constructors', seven drivers'). The rivalry between racing legends Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost became F1's central focus in 1988, and continued until Prost retired at the end of 1993. Tragically, Senna died at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix after crashing into a wall on the exit of the notorious curve Tamburello, having taken over Prost's lead drive at Williams that year. The FIA worked to improve the sport's safety standards since that weekend, during which Roland Ratzenberger also lost his life in an accident during Saturday qualifying. No driver has died on the track at the wheel of a Formula One car since, though two track marshals have lost their lives, one at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix, and the other at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.

Since the deaths of Senna & Ratzenberger, the FIA has used safety as a reason to impose rule changes which otherwise, under the Concorde Agreement, would have had to be agreed upon by all the teams - most notably the changes introduced for 1998. This so called 'narrow track' era resulted in cars with smaller rear tyres, a narrower track overall and the introduction of 'grooved' tyres to reduce mechanical grip. There would be four grooves, on the front and rear, that ran through the entire circumference of the tyre. The objective was to reduce cornering speeds and to produce racing similar to rain conditions by enforcing a smaller contact patch between tyre and track. This was to promote driver skill and provide a better spectacle.

Results have been mixed as the lack of mechanical grip has resulted in the more ingenious designers clawing back the deficit with aerodynamic grip - pushing more force onto the tyres through wings, aerodynamic devices etc - which in turn has resulted in less overtaking as these devices tend to make the wake behind the car 'dirty' preventing other cars from following closely, due to their dependence on 'clean' air to make the car stick to the track. The grooved tyres also had the unfortunate side effect of initially being of a harder compound, to be able to hold the groove tread blocks, which resulted in spectacular accidents in times of aerodynamic grip failure e.g. rear wing failures, as the harder compound could not grip the track as well.

The more innovative teams have found ways to maximise this dramatic change. McLaren, in a car designed by Adrian Newey, used a 'fiddle' brake on their 1998 car which allowed the driver to apply the brake to one or the other of the rear two wheels to provide them with a better 'toe' into a corner. This was eventually banned as a driver aid.

Drivers from McLaren, Williams, Renault (formerly Benetton) and Ferrari, dubbed the "Big Four", have won every World Championship from 1984 to the present day. Due to the technological advances of the 1990s, the cost of competing in Formula One rose dramatically. This increased financial burden, combined with four teams' dominance (largely funded by big car manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz (DaimlerChrysler)), caused the poorer independent teams to struggle not only to remain competitive, but to stay in business. Financial troubles forced several teams to withdraw.

Engineers and designers first made a virtual prototype of the new model, loaded some 2130 gigabytes of data Computer stimulations to virtually test all the aspects of the 2008 C-Class and fascinated everyone present with a wicked platform of tests that persistently rumble and shake a totally completed car. A Ride Stimulator was attached to duplicate the car's response to all varieties of road surfaces. It was installed in the data banks of the machine. It was tested for a short ride on a virtual circuit. Mercedes built 280 real prototypes after completing the virtual prototype of the C-Class model. The 280 units were driven the equivalent of 600 times around the world, on three continents. A drive test on how the car's endurance will respond when it is pushed to the limit.

The C-Class is offered in two models: Luxury and Sport, each with distinctive front-end treatments, trim levels, and suspension tuning. When it hits dealerships this summer, customers will get to choose among three models: the C300 Luxury which gets a 3.0-liter, 228-horsepower V-6 and a choice of rear or all-wheel drive, as well as the C350 Luxury and C350 Sport both powered by a larger 3.5-liter V-6 with an output of 268 horses. One of the biggest concerns with VoIP is the lack of connectivity to emergency phone services (like 911) and the other is security in terms of privacy. Data transmitted over the internet is not always secure and there is no telling when someone might not be listening to your private conversations. Since the calls are routed over the internet there is no difference between calling someone in the same postcode or in a different country, as long as the VoIP network is the same.

PSP System Review

The PSP system is the first handheld system made by Sony. For a long time now the Nintendo company has dominated the market for hand held systems. The Game Boy and now the new Nintendo DS have been the top hand held systems in the market. That was until the Sony PSP system came along.

The first thing I noticed about the PSP system is that it looks nothing like the other portable gaming systems out there. The screen on the PSP is much larger then on any other popular portable gaming system. It has a very sleek design, and I do believe it fits in your hands the way you would want a portable system to feel, like a game controller. It is a bit heavier than the other game systems, it feels much sturdier.

The controls on the PSP will feel a lot like a Playstation 2 controller. One of the major differences in the PSP control is the new "analog nub" which was used instead of the joysticks on the Playstation controller. This "nub" is a little weird at first because it has more of a sliding motion as opposed to the tilting motion you get with the playstation controllers, but once you have used it for a little while it becomes like second nature. The "action" buttons on the PSP system are located where they would be in the Playstation controller. These buttons are very responsive and very well placed. There are only one L and R button; these are placed on the top of the system, in a similar place as the Playstation controller. I personally have a little bit of a hard time with these buttons as they for some reason just don't feel right, but you do get used to them. Then there are the start and select buttons which I don't really like at all, (it's a good thing you don't really have to use those buttons too much). These buttons are very small and located toward the bottom of the PSP system by a bunch of other buttons that feel the exact same way. The other buttons are the home button, which will take you out of your game or movie and back to the main screen, there is a brightness button which allows you to control the brightness of your screen, there are the volume buttons, and a mute button. Like I said before all these buttons are the same size and shape, which is something that I don't really like because sometimes you accidentally push the wrong button and it totally throws you off. The next button is the power/hold button. I really like the way this button works. It is located on the right side of the system. This button has 4 purposes, purpose number 1 is to turn on the system, you do this by pushing it up, purpose number 2 is to put the system on hold which makes all of the system buttons non operational, you do this by pushing it down, purpose number 3 is to put the system into sleep mode, you do this by pushing the button up for just a second, the last purpose for this button is to turn the system off, you do this by pushing the button up and holding it for about 3 seconds until you see the system power off. On the left side of the PSP system you will find a button that feels similar to the power button, this is the wi-fi switch. It turns wi-fi on and off, up is on, down is off. On the top of the system is a switch that slides from left to right. This switch opens the UMD slot which is where you put your game or movie. The top of the system also has the mini-USB port for connecting to a computer.

Playing the PSP system is like a totally new experience. You start by turning on your system. If you don't have anything in the disc slot it will bring you to the home screen. From the home screen you can control almost everything that has to do with your PSP System. You can play a game or watch a movie one of two ways. You can either put the disc in before or you can put it in after you turn on the system. If you put the disc in before you turn on the system then the game will start to load automatically without going to the home screen first. If you don't put the disc in first then you have to find the UMD icon and select it, then the game will start loading. When you put a game in it will take about 20-30 seconds to load to that games title screen. Then the load times for the game are significantly shorter in the 3-5 second range. While you are playing a game you can press the home button at any time and it will bring you back to the main screen, but first it will ask you if you are sure you want to quit your game. I like this because sometimes you accidentally hit the home button when you are going for the volume buttons. I would just like to briefly mention the screen. It is a 16:9 widescreen LCD and it is amazing. More then I thought was capable on such a small system. I am telling you that you will be totally shocked and amazed when you see the quality of picture this little machine creates.

Anyone who already owns the PSP system knows the reasons why this system is so great. If you don't already own one I urge you to get down to the store and grab one right now. Number plate enthusiasts often own more than one registration and many own huge collections of private plates. Patients having to undergo neurosurgery will now benefit from a new technology that allows neurosurgeons to visualize actual blood flow in vessels and reveal obstructions, assess patency (the openness or lack of obstruction of a bodily passage or duct) and confirm the success of surgery, such as arterial bypass or aneurysm clipping. The visualization is accomplished through the microscope eyepieces in real time, during neurovascular surgery.

The new FL800 integrated neurovascular fluorescence device from Leica Microsystems is used in conjunction with the Akorn™ fluorescence agent Indocyanine Green™ (ICG) to view neurovascular blood flow.

ICG neurovascular fluorescence provides a relatively straightforward way to visualize blood flow in vessels within the operative field. "Patients will benefit from this new assessment method, as this information is often quite important in the treatment of various conditions, such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and vascular reconstruction," says Dr. Fady Charbel, Department Head of Neurosurgery, University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. "Such a tool will likely decrease the need for more conventional intraoperative, X-ray-based contrast angiography."

The procedure is straightforward for a surgeon to perform. The ICG agent is injected intravenously into the patient; a camera detects the fluorescence signal and displays the image to the surgeon through the microscope eyepieces and/or on a monitor. Since the procedure can be repeated six times in a single surgery, the surgeon can review initial, baseline images later in surgery for comparison purposes, track the effects of a surgical procedure on blood flow in the brain and confirm patency.

Says Dr. Charbel, "With further utilization and accumulation of data, ICG fluorescence holds great promise for more widespread use during neurovascular procedures."

Dr. Charbel headed the clinical trials of the Leica FL800 integrated neurovascular fluorescence device at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. Leica Microsystems, Inc., a leading global designer and producer of precision optical microscopes and systems for the analysis of microstructures, received FDA 510(k) clearance to market the new device in November 2006.

Leica FL800 allows neurosurgeons to view neurovascular blood flow during surgery.

Being living in Bangladesh has always been so gr8. but when it comes to develop ur career and education most ppl from high class society go to foreign countries. though we r living in the 21st century some parents of our country don't still look at the positive site of getting a better educatoin outside. I admit that there r many reasons to think the other way. but the possiblities and opportunities that a person gets after achieving a higher degree in Bangladesh can't be compared to a degree within the country. we will talk abt our education and it's good and bad site and will try to implement the system of other countries but that will not surely solve the problem our educational sector. The ministers who can play an important role on this matter doesn't really understand the sitution caz their children r all educated in ENG medium schools!!. the best person to solve all the problems in our educational sector is to give power to someone who hav experienced both the right and wrong side of it.

well before the period of election hartal and striks have become really a common matter in dhaka. the main two political parties continue to slap each other on and off the road. as a student sometimes i feel lucky on the hartal day caz i get to study before an exam or my xam either gets cancelled.The problem is normal ppl can't go to work and sometime the picketers take out the thier rage on civilian cars and buses. so in either way the sufferer is the normal public who is called the most post important part of a Democratic country.I don;t knw whether other countries of the world got this kinda protest or strikes hampering the whole chain system of the country's education and business community.

Current situation of Internet in Bangladesh

I thought that when i will write this post i would hav already been connected with the submarine cable internet connection.But as everything here has to go in a certainly uncetain way , it's still unclear whether this submarine cable will bring any good to our country and when.the isp and bttb continue to blame each other but the real suffer is always the client. in some way either of them is doing something illigal or something wrong and they knw it but they don;t uncover each others wrong doing as that might create problem of both of them. Bangladesh may be a small developing country, most of the ppl r still no used with pc or internet. but there is a huge community of computer and internet user who want to form a career with it or do some business depending on it. i personally wud say that i am really upset with the current internet situation. i gave up my line as i thought the price of internet connectoin will go down after connecting with the information highway and also the speed will increase. but the situation is currently just the opposite of it. now if u want to get a internet connection u will hav to pay more then 5000tk as connection charge and the monthly bill 1500tk with unlimited downloading and website browsing. but the speed of those line is only 64-128 kilobits!! per sec. it was just the same as it was before. the isps say they can't reduce price caz they need to keep 2 connections at a time.if they can't reduce price then y don;t they increase the speed? the bttb says they have already sold bandwidths to isps worth of 6.5crore. then where r those bandwidths. actual prob in this number one corrupted country in the world is ppl just don;t really care abt something unless they r affected themselves. we the home users r the biggest suffers of this submarine cable saga between isp and bttb.
no one knws when this condition will change. hope it does change soon.

recently, I'm sadly becoming aware of what's going on with hollywood's cinema. It still amazes me their skill to get such a awesome idea, work on it for many months, delight millions of people with it, and then ruin it all with the help of a no-sense-no-effort crappy movie, a third and a fourth movie.
Today I've seen the worst of the movies I've seen in my life: The Butterfly Effect 2. It's just desesperating how they could ruin such a great Idea with that crappy "hot" scenes and that senseless story. It's obvious that they didn't even effort to make it successful. they just wanted to make a cheap-fast movie to earn lots of money out of it.
are we going to get junk movies the next few years???? is Mc Donalds going to open a cinema network????

* 1 ounce fresh yeast
* or
* 1/2 ounce dried yeast
* 1 pinch sugar
* 1/2 pint lukewarm water
* 14 ounces plain flour
* 1 teaspoon salt (scant)
Pizza Recipes
* 1/4 pint olive oil
* corn meal (polenta)
* 3/4 pint tomato and garlic sauce
* 1 pound mozzarella, cut into 1/4 inch dice
* 6 tablespoons Parmesan, freshly grated

Directions:
Crumble the fresh yeast or sprinkle the dried yeast and a pinch of sugar into 3 tablespoons of lukewarm water. Be sure that the water is lukewarm (110 - 115 F. - neither too hot nor too cold to the touch). Let it stand for 2 to 3 minutes, then stir the yeast and sugar into the water until
completely dissolved. Put the cup in a warm, draught-free place for 3 to 5 minutes, until the yeast bubbles up and the mixture almost doubles in volume. If the yeast does not bubble, start over again with fresh yeast.
Sift the flour and salt into a large, warmed bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and pour in the yeast mixture, 3/8 pint of lukewarm water and 3 tablespoons of the olive oil. Mix the dough with a fork or your fingers.
When you can gather it into a rough ball, place the dough on a floured board and knead it for about 15 minutes, until smooth, shiny and elastic. Dust the dough lightly with flour, put in a large clean bowl and cover. Place the bowl in a warm, draught-free spot for about 1 1/2 hours, until the dough has doubled in bulk.
Now preheat the oven to 450 F. Punch the dough down with your fists and break off about one quarter of it to make the first of the 4 pizzas. Knead the small piece on a floured board or a table for a minute or so, working in a little flour if the dough seems sticky. Flatten the ball into a circle
about 1 inch thick with the palm of your hand. Hold the circle in your hands and stretch the dough by turning the circle and pulling your hands apart gently at the same time.
When the circle is about 7 or 8 inches across, spread it out on the floured board again and pat it smooth, pressing together any tears in the dough. Then roll the dough with a rolling pin, from the entre to the far edge, turning it clockwise after each roll, until you have a circle of pastry about 10 inches across and about 1/8 inch thick.
Crimp or flute the edge of the circle with your thumbs until it forms a little rim. Dust a large baking sheet lightly with corn meal and gently place the pizza dough on top of it.
Knead, stretch and roll the rest of the dough into 3 more pizzas.
Pour 6 tablespoons of the tomato sauce on each pizza and spread it with a pastry brush or the back of a spoon.
To make a cheese pizza, sprinkle the sauce with 6 tablespoons of mozzarella and 2 tablespoons of grated Parmesan. Dribble 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the pizza and bake it on the lowest shelf

Gambino Crime Family

Although it is difficult to put a dollar value on criminal interests, the Gambino crime family is certainly the richest and most powerful criminal organization in the United States today. Worth hundreds of millions of dollars, the family has a criminal workforce of at least 800 men, and its empire ranges from every borough of New York City to the green felt of Atlantic City and Las Vegas, to the heroin plants of Sicily and Asia, to stolen car outlets in Kuwait. Small wonder it has been labeled by one newspaper as Gambino, Inc. In his reign from 1957 to 1976 Carlo Gambino took a second-string crime family and built it into the Mafia's jewel in the crown, far more wealthy than even the family originally ruled by Lucky Luciano, far more powerful than the Capone-descended Chicago Outfit.

The original family dates to the pre-national syndicate days of Alfred Mineo and Steve Ferrigno in the 1920s when Joe the Boss Masseria controlled the Mafia. They were murdered in 1930 in a bloody ambush carried out by Joe Profaci, Nick Capuzzi, Joe Valachi and a gunman known now only as Buster from Chicago. Taking over were Vince and Phil Mangano, who became part of the modern American Mafia as constituted by Luciano. They ran an outfit limited largely to rackets in Brooklyn, the waterfront and gambling—horse betting, the numbers, the Italian lottery.
The Manganos lasted until 1951 when Phil Mangano the less important brother, was murdered by orders o underling Albert Anastasia, already infamous as the chief executioner of Murder, Inc. Vince disappeared a the same time and Anastasia simply took over. No one dared object.

Anastasia, unofficially aided and advised by Frank Costello (who belonged to another family), expanded the organization greatly into new rackets, especially) gambling, loan-sharking, and narcotics trafficking through the piers the mob controlled. Anastasia could only go so far, being a mad hatter who was distracted into meaningless and dangerous activities. (He'd order a citizen knocked off who recognized bank robber Willie Sutton, a criminal with no ties to the mob, simply because he hated "stoolies.")

Anastasia was also caught up in the intrigue between his friend Costello and Vito Genovese for control of the largest family, Lucky Luciano's own organization. In 1957, Genovese deposed Costello and succeeded in having Anastasia killed with the connivance of Anastasia's aide, Carlo Gambino. Once Gambino achieved his goal of control of the Anastasia crime family, he had no further need for Genovese, a mobster with delusions of becoming the new boss of bosses. In machinations involving the deposed Costello, the deported Luciano and Meyer Lansky, and probably others, Gambino arranged to have Genovese set up and delivered into the hands of the federal narcotics people on a framed case.

Over the succeeding years, Gambino extended the power and influence of his crime family. The relatively small Mangano operation became the biggest in New York and the nation. Gambino, with the departure of Costello from the active scene, became Meyer Lansky's most important partner in national syndicate enterprises and became recognized, as Luciano was in the 1930s, as the de facto boss of bosses. Gambino foiled the plots of Joe Bonanno to assassinate him and other crime leaders and so to become the most powerful don in the United States.

In the 1970s, ill health forced Gambino's gradual withdrawal from the public eye, although he remained the cunning kingpin right up to his death in 1976. Before he died, Gambino settled on his succession. Logically it should have been his underboss, Aniello Dellacroce, a tough killer who could prevent incursions into the family's rights. (Indeed, Dellacroce proved to be a key man in the assassination of Carmine Galante in 1979 when the latter moved to take over the New York families.) However, Gambino believed strongly in family ties and tapped Paul Castellano, his brother-in-law, as his successor.

Some dons would have so decreed and left their decision to the fates. Gambino realized that if Dellacroce went to war, he would destroy Castellano. The cunning Gambino realized too that murdering Dellacroce would solve nothing. Another would replace him and the lessthan-imposing Castellano would still be in the same boat. Gambino had to make Dellacroce Castellano's life insurance policy. He accomplished that by offering Dellacroce essential control of all the family's lucrative Manhattan activities, a sort of crime family within a crime family arrangement that Dellacroce could not refuse.

To further his plans, Gambino counted on the support of Frank "Funzi" Tieri, who he had installed as the head of the old Genovese family after he arranged to have boss Tommy Eboli "clipped." Tieri was Dellacroce's match and could be counted on to remain loyal to Gambino after death and to be supportive of Castellano. He was, but his natural abilities inevitably overshadowed Castellano's; without even trying, Tieri emerged as New York's most powerful don.

In a sense, then, Paul Castellano presided over a decline of the Gambinos, but in 1981 Tieri died. Weaker leadership, or perhaps a divided one, in the Genovese family righted the Gambino fortunes, and under Castellano and Dellacroce primacy was restored. Dellacroce, suffering from cancer, made no move to depose Castellano, even though a Young Turk element, epitomized by a violent capo named John Gotti (who modeled himself after his idol, the murderous Albert Anastasia), grew constantly more dissatisfied with Castellano's rule. However the Young Turks, out of a combination of fear and genuine affection for the old boss, dared not strike as long as Dellacroce lived. Dellacroce, like the Turks, felt that the family should get into the lucrative fields of armored car robberies, hijackings and expanded narcotics activities, while Castellano laid great stock in loan-sharking, union construction shakedowns and such relatively easy crimes as car theft. With those activities fully manned, Castellano tried to starve the Young Turks.

On December 2, 1985, Dellacroce died. Paul Castellano lasted just two weeks, being assassinated along with an aide obviously being groomed as a counter to John Gotti. Tony Soprano’s crisis is always personal, which deflects much worry
about his crimes in collective society. The farther away from his criminal
conduct and social roles as an active member of society or participant in
an American economy, the better the melodrama likes it. Such a reversal
of audience scrutiny from the material crimes of the mob boss toward his
intimate relations stamps Tony as always self-involved. However, it’s
instructive to look briefly at his economic status. Tony is light years away
from the status of a Corleone. It’s easy to see Tony as somewhat of a
struggling businessman, albeit one with rolls of cash tucked in his shirt.
Tony and the Soprano crime family nibble on the edges of a millennial
boom economy that has “legitimately” passed them by making others
instant millionaires and billionaires through a 1990’s stock market boom
and total emphasis on technology. In fact, Tony’s “businesses” are antiquated
and piecemeal: protection, auto theft rings, hijacking truckloads
of merchandise (to poke through the contents), scams selling bogus phone
calling cards to lonely immigrants, attempts to establish backroom gambling
as an “executive” card game. Tony’s into a little bit of everything
but has labor and management worries everywhere.27 His new recruits
are moronically eager, his most trusted associate has been turned by the
FBI. He’s still an underboss with no sense of Corleone grandness. Tony
attends no major mob conventions to carve up the U.S. territory but
instead is usually pulling up to dump sites, loading docks, and forlorn
Meadowland vistas in his SUV, trying to ride herd on his impulsive
young lieutenants and collect the various monies due to him out of fear.
He’s not letting Uncle Junior and his wing of the family “earn” as Jackie
Aprile had done before his death. He suppresses incursions from other
racial and ethnic groups, as well as soundings from the postmodern
media and technology. Christopher wants to be a “player” in cinema and
market or create “himself.” Tony sets him up with a phony license in
fronting a small brokerage office, where “brokerage” connotes broken
bones of young traders if the Webistics stock doesn’t get sold. Tony’s
view that “things are trending downward” and that he’s “coming in at
the end” (1, 1) is confirmed. The Sopranos are more of a danger to their
immediate family and each other than they are a cancer on American
society; they toil in an unhealthy and dangerous occupation that is fading,
such as coal mining. Tony’s problems become more those of a
midcareer executive facing obsolescence.
The Soprano family is living out Cawelti’s obervation that the “essential
social-psychological dynamic of social melodrama is one of continually
integrating new social circumstances to the developing middle
class sense of social value” (46). The question becomes then: what narratives
cannot be absorbed by the American middle class if the mob boss

becomes just another tired, befuddled guy driving home to suburbia
every evening? Does murder become just another “social circumstance”
the audience will abide if other resemblances to themselves are strong
enough? If Tony drives an SUV and commutes to work with a cell phone
stuck to his ear and lives in a big suburban house and worries about his
employees and a dying occupation and cheers for his daughter playing
soccer, does he become one of us only? Or is he still a murdering mob
boss? It is clear from the first three seasons that one thrust of The Sopranos
is not to put Tony in prison but to rehabilitate him, help him “put it all
behind him”: the rage, the horrible mother, the enervating depression,
his killing, his evil ways. Melodrama’s Utopian hope and end point is
always to elevate its hero to this virtuous state, but given The Sopranos’
serial form and its great success, Tony’s rebirth is not likely to occur any
time soon.
What is so central to The Sopranos is what has always been at the
core of melodrama: home. Home is where Tony arrives at the beginning
of each episode. The show is very centered on region, and no one has
captured the much-maligned New Jersey on film like The Sopranos. Over
the opening credits, Tony emerges from the Lincoln Tunnel into Jersey,
passes over the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike,
goes by smaller row houses, weedy lots, refineries, factories, and small
businesses; the roads become smaller, the houses, sleeker and farther
apart. Finally the last stretch takes him down a tree-lined road, and he
pulls up in his own driveway in North Caldwell, alighting from the car
with a final thrice-repeated “got yourself a gun” hammering on the
soundtrack. Dad is home. Tony’s drive also simulates the long march
(but short distance) earlier immigrants took from the now grim, older
factory towns in a new migration to a suburban frontier; Philip Roth had
the dynamic right decades ago in Goodbye, Columbus (1959) when his Neil
Klugman thinks that “it would not take an eagle to carry me up those
lousy one hundred and eighty feet that make summer nights so much
cooler in Short Hills than they are in Newark” (10). The Soprano crime
family still functions in the inner older Jersey cities; the Soprano nuclear
family nestles in an upper-middle-class suburb. The series has yet to
invade one turf with the other (except for a periodic FBI search warrant
visit), to suggest as boldly as Puzo and Coppola did in Godfather II that
Michael Corleone’s family fortress on Lake Tahoe could be invaded by
his business “life” and that his bedroom could be the site of an assassination
attempt, the family place, as Michael rages at his lieutenants,
“where my wife sleeps!” and then softly, in still steely tones, “where my
children come and play with their toys.”
To scale a putative godfather down to the small screen, Chase provides
Tony with echoes of American television fathers from landmark TV
programs. Tony Soprano has the discontents, strong opinions, and generally
conservative leanings of an Archie Bunker in All in the Family,
which began with a nostalgic “Those Were the Days” screeched by Edith
Bunker and sung by Archie as the camera rolled through a block of
modest homes on an older Queens street before pulling up in front of
Archie’s house, where he is indubitably “at home” in his famous battered
chair. The Simpsons’ opening features the whole family racing home from
different places as Homer leaves the nuclear power plant and careens
through Springfield’s environs before landing plopped down in front of
the TV with Marge and his brood, the credits for the program starting so
fast that it seems they’re watching The Simpsons.28 In reversing the opening
home image, the 1970s most honored and least ironic TV family
melodrama, The Waltons, ended in a large country house, the many family
members talking between the rooms, lovingly saying “goodnight” as
the lights went out one by one, including those of family chronicler “John
Boy” Walton.29 The mother and father of The Waltons were Olivia and
John, a very close fit to Livia and “Johnny Boy” Soprano in perhaps a
skewed homage by Chase.30Without undertaking a close analysis of Tony
Soprano set against these famous TV fathers, it’s certain that Chase places
him in a long line and wide range of very referential figures that an
audience knows and appreciates—blustery, opinionated, comic, serious,
conservative, liberal, interested in children, wanting to do the right things,
occasionally absurd, always loved by the family. The economic function
of these fathers varies. Archie’s on the loading dock, Homer’s in the
nuclear power plant, John Walton’s in his backyard lumber business, and
Tony is in “Waste Management” (Chase’s pun)..31
The fact that The Sopranos is on HBO allows speculation about the
class dynamics of the Soprano family’s televised representation and also
speaks to both melodrama and cable television’s altering of TV viewing
patterns and their analogies to movie going. Home Box Office is the most
exclusive American cable television service and reaches only about onequarter
of American homes available to network broadcasts (Carter “HBO
Wants to Make Sure You Notice” 97). Since it is not included in “basic”
cable packages, HBO and its lauded original series are promoted and
screened to a more elite audience, viwers who can pay for cable and also
pay for an extra premium cable service. HBO viewers can choose from
a range of programs that allow for more artistic freedom than is usually
granted series television, in terms of both content and style: no checks on
obscene language or presentation of sex, no commercial breaks, and the
chance to run shows consecutively for, in the case of The Sopranos, thirteen
weeks with no breaks for reruns or waiting for network “sweeps”
periods. The Sopranos also takes on the form of the great nineteenthcentury
melodramas of writers such as Charles Dickens. A new chapter
appears in the serial every week, with action ranging over many facets
of the characters’ lives without picking up the narrative thread exactly
where the last chapter dropped it (every Dickens reader has the experience
of going deeply into one of his characters for fifty pages at the

outset of a majestic melodrama such as Bleak House and then not having
that character reappear in the textured and cross-referenced plot until
around page 400). The Sopranos moves confidently in the guise of such a
long, unfolding Victorian novel. If you missed the flashback scene of
Tony’s youth with his young parents (1, 7), then you’ve missed a piece
of his puzzle. Yet HBO, because of the popularity of the series, runs each
Sopranos episode “in season” like a first-run movie, with a first presentation
of a new episode on Sunday night and the repeats of the same
episode in staggered hours on three or four other nights during that
week. You may “go to” The Sopranos in your home on the evening of
your choice and find it still running within a given week. Then this serial
experience is repeated the following week. Finally HBO then “reruns”
the entire thirteen-week cycle of shows to prepare viewers for a new
cycle, becoming in effect, a second-run movie house. HBO operates as a
theater chain with different show times, but its viewing is in the private
control of the home, which would include taping the show for rebroadcast
at the “leisure” of the viewers. Cassette and disk copies of The Sopranos
are now available at video rental stores as well.
One prominent feature of the Soprano home is a large TV screen,
where A. J. plays video games or Tony watches the History Channel on
cable. Thus, we may surmise Tony gets HBO; The Sopranos is about the
home, broadcast by Home Box Office to the home, and Tony is very
much in the home as is the television set itself, an intimate part of the
domestic decor of the American family dwelling, likely to be speaking at
all hours, even when no one is listening, the background noise and companion
to American family life. As many critics have noted, the experience
of viewing films is fundamentally different from viewing television,
on the level of image projection and visual response all the way up to
and including the phenomenological occasion that each viewing experience
suggests. Films are seen in large, darkened theaters, where the projection
of an image comes frame by frame from behind the viewer toward
a brightened screen in front. The audience sits scattered in anonymity,
having paid for the experience of “going to” the film. The film is watched
consecutively without a break. The figures on the screen are enormous in
scale in comparison with the filmgoer’s body. Television is far more intimate
and domesticated within the home. Barthes calls television the
very “opposite experience” of the cinema: “the space is familiar, organized
by furniture and familiar objects, tamed. Television condemns us
to the family whose household utensil it has become” (Allen 187–188).
The television set, which may be lodged in the middle of many machines
in a home “entertainment system,” projects pictures out at the viewer,
who most often is in its light instead of a cinema’s darkness and may be
on the move or talking, eating, cooking, having sex, walking in and out
of the room, channel surfing, hitting the mute button, watching a cassette
on the VCR, and so on.

Television also moves episode by episode in its regularly scheduled
programs in the pattern of the everyday, which suggests family and work
structures in a stable core behavior, against which almost any other behavior
looks abnormal and must be defined against the normative and
absorbed by it (Ellis 158). Television generally regards the world from
isolated viewpoints (166), which, when added to TV production budgets
that are much smaller than those of cinema on the whole, combine to
make familiar repeated interior spaces the norm for series. Such stability
aids what Mimi White calls television’s “regulated latitude of ideological
positions” (Allen, 162–63), its even-handedness in balancing viewpoints
even within family disputes in an attempt not so much to disclose new
problems or social formations but to work through the known in the
guise of a simulated range of event and reflection. Thus The Sopranos can
posit Tony Soprano as haunted son and murderer but also as loving
father and family provider. The series may criticize Tony from Melfi’s
universalist professional high ground and Carmela’s religious faith at the
same time it retains Tony’s hegemony as a male action hero without
unresolvable contradiction or closure. In fact, the family itself is a crucible
like television itself, where all is to be admitted and forgiven. Television
in the guise of representational balancing might actually make The
Sopranos look more revolutionary than it is simply by cracking the male
monolithic mob discourse, not by a social criticism or by an insurgent
feminist critique but by giving the professional woman/maternal substitute
(Melfi) and the true woman/wife (Carmela) a chance to question
Tony through the melodramatic form itself, that of a domestic serial with
its strong links to nighttime TV soap opera such as the more businessoriented
Dallas and Falcon Crest, as well as the more sentimental
thirtysomething.32 Lest The Sopranos look too domesticated, part of its
evenhandedness comes from the equally strong segments of each episode
in which Tony and his men act apart from the family and the women
in the suburbs to do their violent business and congregate in the back
room of Bada Bing to plot against their enemies. In such moments they
seem women-free except for the exotic dancers wriggling in the background,
until they head for home.
More recent TV workplace shows feature a mixed gendered professional
family in, most often, the police station, law office, or hospital, the
preferred melodramatic workplace collective family of the 1990s (ER,
Ally McBeal, LA Law, St. Elsewhere, The Practice, Law and Order) that pretty
well cancels out specific domestic space and children and suggests such
segmentation to be out of date. The Sopranos doggedly retains a separate
domestic sphere, which TV seals and penetrates at odd postmodern
moments. On the TV show The Sopranos, Tony Soprano in his own living
room watches himself be arraigned in federal court on the ten o’clock
news, another television show. Carmela is utterly bereft as she identifies
with the heroine of Remains of the Day on her television set. Tony Soprano

always drives back to the home that broadcasts The Sopranos; presumably
he can go inside and watch the show. The Sopranos extends the contradictions
of The Godfather into the problems and lives of those inheritors who
absorb the book and movie even as they adapt it, though no one on The
Sopranos ever mentions Puzo or his book; it’s all movie talk and culture.33
Finally, HBO itself is a rival gang to network television, seeking to
grab its share of the audience from other TV corporate “families.” Much
of the early reporting about The Sopranos concerned its marketing and
promotion, the differences between the license granted to Chase and his
team set against the networks who passed on the show in development
but who now have spinoffs on the air and in production.34 HBO’s goal is
to make Sopranos images as widespread as possible, with tie-ins to music
CDs from each episode in the series. Soprano fan “megasites” are on the
Web, with instant transcripts of the show’s dialogue week by week, maps
of Tony’s route home through northern New Jersey, the actual address
and name of Bada Bing, and at the end of both seasons an on-line contest
to choose the best line spoken by a Sopranos character.35 Viewers were
encouraged to vote on line as to what they thought would happen in the
season finale. Besides The Sopranos regularly coming into their homes
(like mail delivery and waste management), viewers can purchase Sopranos
goods and images and participate in their family life as an American
media phenomenon and a shopping network. It’s too bad beleaguered
Tony can’t get a piece of the internet action on the Sopranos on
The Sopranos.
Chase has perfected The Sopranos as a TV vehicle, but it wasn’t always
that easy for him to accept his fate. He wanted movie fame outside
the medium, but now after The Sopranos success, he asks, “Where am I ever
going to go where it’s going to be this good again? (Carter “He Engineered
a Mob Hit” 90).36 Television becomes the known enclave, the cross-coded
ethnic and media security beyond further exploration into other forms
(cinema, cultures). Chase exhibits the classic signs of self-awareness about
the cultural capital of the two media, cinema and television, but comes
into a better relation to his role than did Puzo, who never accepted The
Godfather as a substitute for his earlier aspirations in fiction nor film as a
substitute for the novel. Chase’s cry about what is there for him past The
Sopranos mirrors his character Christopher’s attempt to leave the family
(the show?) for the movies, but he reluctantly comes back to the fold,
realizing that whatever he’s looking for “out there” cannot match what he
knows is familiar: Tony’s power, promises, and security. Chase creates
within TV at a level that few other continuing drama series have ever
achieved, while registering the tensions between “the life” of crime (television)
posited against his own ambitions in a more elite representation
(cinema). While providing the sensational action narrative that the TV
audience expects of mob narrative, Chase also gives the audience what it
equally expects, melodrama’s making vivid all moral choice and family

conflict. His melodrama laboring in the vineyards of TV with less cultural
capital than conferred by cinema seems to be providing a happy ending
for him, rather than the one depicted in Puzo’s going bad saga with The
Godfather when he wrote below his gifts. Television has become Chase’s
home, where he is at home with The Sopranos.
Jean Luc Godard famously commented, “Television can project
nothing but US” (Allen 193), and so it is that Chris Albrecht, president
of HBO “original programming,” can say of The Sopranos that “these
characters are all completely relateable. The only difference between Tony
Soprano and me is that he’s a mob boss” (NYT 7). With such gleeful
identification, it’s no stretch at all to find Tony Soprano welcomed into
American homes with the values that his home espouses as the television
family becomes the surrogate for the normative society that mounts the
medium and controls the messages. Yet it would be a mistake to consider
The Sopranos as merely watered down mob narrative. In fact, television
sustains the dialogue with the culture that had most lionized The Godfather
in the first place, seeing in its own power of absorption the ability
to domesticate the “other” and be thrilled by the residue of freedom in
violence that remains so American. The Sopranos also adapts, in Tony’s
discomfort and desire for grace, a last trace of the culture’s residual Puritan
insistence on individual responsibility, on the “what’s wrong with me”
that has driven our centuries-long idealism even as it fuels our narcissism,
until we no longer can distinguish one from the other. We still revel
in Tony’s individual freedom to solve his knottiest business problems swiftly
and without remorse. The sentimental hope to reform him to be a better
husband, father, and American citizen is countered by the audience’s sensational
thrill about Tony’s identity: stay as you are; solve your own problems;
don’t become like everyone else. The schizophrenic vote appears to
be in: Americans no longer see much difference between Tony Soprano
and themselves. In fact, he has become a “representative man,” confused
by business, wife, children, parents, and self; he has assimilated even in
the face of his own protests as an Italian American victim. He is truly
troubled by dreams he cannot fathom, but he awakes and slips the yoke
of his conscience by wielding the male power that he still possesses on
behalf of family. Here is America’s most powerful and potentially most
dangerous enduring dream.

Security of Bluetooth devices

The regular address changes necessary for anonymity result in new address management and new addresses being introduced. Three address types are suggested:
fixed address, active address, and alias address. The active address is randomly
selected, and anonymous devices base the Bluetooth access codes on this
address. Recall that the access code can be used to track the location of a device.
Rules for how and when the active address is updated are given. It is actually also
the case that the different address behavior for anonymous devices implies that inquiry and paging must be handled a little bit differently than for nonanonymous
devices. This is primarily handled by using three different connectable
modes: connectable mode, private connectable mode, and general connectable mode.
The secure identification in anonymity mode is built on the usage of the alias
addresses and the so-called alias authentication. Also, the pairing has to be
slightly changed in order to allow anonymous devices to securely page and identify
each other. All these new features mean that some additional control signaling
is needed and that some new LMP commands need to be defined.
8.2 Address usage
In this section, the addresses and address usage for devices supporting the
anonymous mode are described. In contrast to ordinary Bluetooth, fixed
addresses cannot be used for all purposes. Therefore, new addresses are introduced
and the device address is used in a little bit different way than in the Bluetooth
1.2 specification. This also means that a slightly new and different
terminology is used. The anonymity mode makes use of three different kinds of
device addresses:
1. Fixed device address, BD_ADDR_fixed;
2. Active device address, BD_ADDR;
3. Alias addresses, BD_ADDR_alias.
In the following sections, the different addresses and how they are used in
the anonymity mode are discussed.
8.2.1 The fixed device address, BD_ADDR_fixed
Each Bluetooth transceiver is allocated a unique 48-bit Bluetooth device address
(BD_ADDR_fixed)1 from the manufacturer. The BD_ADDR_fixed consists of
three parts: LAP, UAP, and NAP. Figure 7.3 in Chapter 7 shows the address
field sizes and the format. The fixed address is derived from the IEEE 802 standard
[1]. The LAP and UAP form the significant part of the BD_ADDR.
The fixed address is used to allow a device to directly page another device
that it has previously been paired with. Without a fixed address that can be used
for this purpose, the devices would always need to repeat the inquiry procedure.
Obviously, this would result in very slow connection setup. However, in order
not to jeopardize the anonymity, these addresses shall only be used between
trusted devices (see Section 8.6).

8.2.2 The active device address, BD_ADDR
The BD_ADDR is the active device address, and anonymous devices regularly
update this address (more detail is given below). Devices not supporting the
anonymity mode or devices in nonanonymous mode only use one address,
BD_ADDR. Actually, for such devices the BD_ADDR always equals the
BD_ADDR_fixed (see previous section).
Anonymous devices use the active address as a replacement for an ordinary
fixed address for connection establishment and communication. Since the
address is changed all the time, it will not be possible to track a device based on
this address.
The BD_ADDR has exactly the same format as BD_ADDR_fixed and consists
of three parts: LAP, UAP, and NAP. The UAP and NAP parts are fixed and
shall be chosen to a nondevice-specific value. In particular, they can be chosen
to a value that does not overlap with any company assigned IEEE MAC address
space [1]. This is accomplished, for example, by using the locally assigned IEEE
MAC address space [1]. The LAP part of the BD_ADDR needs to be chosen
uniformly and at random. It can take any value except the 64 reserved LAP values
for general and dedicated inquiry, that is, values from 0x9E8B00 to
0x9E8B33.
In order to combat the location tracking threat, anonymous devices regularly
update the active LAP. The rules for when the address shall be updated are
given below. A LAP value is generated by selecting uniformly at random any
value between 0x000000 and 0xFFFFFF. If the value falls within the
reserved LAP range, that is, values from 0x9E8B00 to 0x9E8B33, a new
random LAP value is generated. This procedure is repeated until a value outside
the range is obtained.
The LAP updating is determined by two time parameters. The parameters
are:
1. Update period, TADDR update;
2. Time period reserved for inquiry, TADDR inquiry period.
The update period tells how often the device shall attempt to update the
active address. The parameter TADDR inquiry period tells how long a time a device must
wait before it is allowed to update the active address after it has sent the current
address in an inquiry response message.
The basic principle is that a device shall update the address every TADDR
update seconds. However, if this updating occasion happens to be when the device
has just sent the current address in an inquiry response, any unit trying to connect
to the anonymous device would fail with the connection request. For this

reason the updating waiting period defined by the second parameter TADDR inquiry
period has been introduced. In addition, there shall be no update if the device is
acting as a master device and has connections with devices not supporting the
anonymous node. Otherwise, the CAC will change and the legacy devices would
immediately lose the connection when the CAC is changed. These facts provide

The detailed updating rules are shown in the flow diagram in Figure 8.1.
The updating flow is as follows:
1. A new LAP is always generated at power-up.
2. Two time variables are set, t1 = 0 and t2 = TADDR inquiry period + 1. t1 measures
the general updating intervals and t2 measures the time from the
last use of the “old address” in an inquiry response. (At the start, t2 is
set to a value greater than the defined updating waiting period after
inquiry response, TADDR inquiry period.)
3. The BD_ADDR is updated and the first timer t1 is started.
4. A loop is created where the timer t1 is continuously checked. If the
timer exceeds the updating period, TADDR update, the looping process
stops. If an inquiry response message is returned during the execution
of the loop, the second timer t2 is set to zero and started.
5. If t2 is less than or equal to TADDR inquiry period, return to the loop in step 4.
6. If the device has no existing connections, a new LAP is generated, followed
by a jump to step 2.
7. A new loop is entered. The loop runs as long as the device has any connection
with a device not supporting the anonymity mode or any
parked device, or if the device is parked itself. If there are no connections
when the loops ends, a new LAP is generated, followed by a jump
back to step 2.
8. A new LAP is generated. If the device is not a master in any piconet,
the new (not yet updated) BD_ADDR is sent to all connected devices
using the new LMP command, LMP active address (see
Section 8.7). Then jump to step 2.
9. The switch instant time, Ts is chosen. It should be chosen such that
the master will be able to inform all connected slaves of the new
BD_ADDR before the instant is reached. Next the master sends the
new BD_ADDR (not yet updated) and the switch instant Ts to all
slaves using the new LMP command LMP active address (see
Section 8.7).

Gotti, John (1940-1994 ): Imprisoned Godfather

Both the Mafia and prosecutors agreed that the most important "godfather" in American crime through the 1990s would be John Gotti, subject of course to the vagaries and uncertainties of mob longevity and legal prosecutions. As one observer has stated, "There's no doubt in my mind the press will be labeling him the new 'Boss of Bosses'—if he lives that long."

Gotti was cut from the old mold, a type some law enforcement officials say hasn't been matched around New York Mafia circles since the demise of Albert Anastasia, the chief executioner of Murder, Inc., and reportedly Gotti's underworld idol.

By 1985, Gotti was considered the top capo in the Gambino crime family, the most powerful Mafia organization in the nation. At the time, he was running rackets—at JFK airport as well as other Gambino operations throughout the New York metropolitan area—and was a particular favorite of underboss of the group Aniello Dellacroce, an aging but still brutal mafioso. As much as Dellacroce liked Gotti, boss Paul Castellano hated him, or more accurately feared him, which in the Mafia automatically breeds hatred.

In 1985, both Castellano and Dellacroce were indicted on a number of charges. Both in their late 60s, long prison terms would effectively end their reigns in the mob. It looked like just a simple waiting period for Gotti.

He waited in style, brutal perhaps, but suave. "Gotti looks like a movie star," said a detective who knew him quite well. "He wears hand-tailored clothes, drives a big black Lincoln and likes good restaurants."

One of five brothers, Gotti worked his way up through the Mafia ranks. He became a capo as a reward for "good works" he did for the late family chief, Carlo Gambino. In 1972 Gambino's nephew, Manny Gambino, was kidnapped by other underworld characters who demanded a $350,000 ransom. After part of the ransom was paid, the kidnappers murdered Manny and buried the corpse in a New Jersey dump. The FBI arrested two suspects while Carlo Gambino put out a contract on a third, James McBratney. McBratney was later dispatched in a Staten Island bar by a three-man execution squad. Gotti, convicted as one of the death squad, served a portion of a seven-year sentence in Green Haven prison. He was no stranger to iron bars, having previously done time for hijacking.

On his release, Gotti was welcomed back by Gambino who saw to it that he moved up rapidly for services rendered. In 1978 or 1979 Gotti was named a capo and became a top associate of Dellacroce. Gotti was known to feel that Dellacroce deserved to be the head of the family instead of Castellano, as thought many other mafiosi. But Dellacroce kept Gotti in line.
Dellacroce knew he was dying of cancer. He told Gotti to be patient, a characteristic that was not Gotti's long suit. Nor was gentility. Toughness was the key. He was once overheard telling another mafioso: "Can you beat this—they're telling me I'm too tough for the job. Can you imagine what our thing [Cosa Nostra] is coming to?"

On another occasion he was overheard chastising an underling for not returning his phone calls. "Follow orders," he was reported to have said, "or I'll blow up your house." The underling, obviously cowed, apologized and swore it wouldn't happen again. "You bet it won't," Gotti was quoted as saying. ''I got to make an example of somebody. Don't let it be you." Seasoned officers swore that if they had shut their eyes and just heard words, they would have been sure it was the ghost of Albert Anastasia talking.

All the law could do was watch Gotti, around whom odd things had a way of happening. Something or other happened to 51-year-old John Favara, a friend and neighbor of Gotti living in the Howard Beach section of Queens. In 1980 Favara ran over and killed Gotti's 12-year-old son, Frank, in a traffic mishap officially declared accidental. Four months later Favara was shoved into a car by some men as he left his job in a furniture plant and was never seen again.

According to police, after the death of young Frank, the Favara family was deluged with anonymous threatening letters and phone calls and their car was spray-painted with the word "murderer." From informers police got reports that Favara had been chainsawed to death and then dumped in a car that was put through a demolition machine and reduced to a one-square-foot block. There was no word on who the chain-sawer could have been.

But there were more important things than a simple murder to worry about. Trouble was brewing in the Gambino family. Dellacroce was so ill he might never stand trial, but many of the young mafiosi worried about Paul Castellano standing up to the prospect of living out the rest of his life behind bars. There was worry that he might start thinking of swapping mob secrets for his freedom.

Gotti didn't seem worried. Then Castellano named a mobster close to him, Thomas Bilotti, to the position of capo, the equal of Gotti. If Dellacroce died, the story went, Castellano was going to name Bilotti underboss, and if he, Castellano, went to prison, Bilotti would take over as godfather. Gotti would be out in the cold.

Dellacroce died on December 2, 1985. Two weeks later Paul Castellano and his protégé Bilotti were shot to death outside a Manhattan steak house. Gotti was in.

Within eight days it seemed Gotti was in charge of the biggest Mafia family in the nation. He was the center of attention at a party in a reputed meeting place of the Gambino family, the Ravenite Social Club at 247 Mulberry Street in Little Italy.

"All the big shots from the family were there," an investigator was quoted, "and Gotti walked in like he owned the joint. He obviously had no fear of anyone."

In 1986, Gotti faced federal prosecution on racketeering charges that could take him out of action for some time. But Gotti probably marked a new trend in the Mafia—back to younger bosses, as was the case in the 1920s and 1930s—because with the government hitting the mobs hard and going after the leaders, the Mafia worried whether the old dons could take the heat. If even one talked, the damage would be enormous. Younger bosses would have a different outlook. A 20-year sentence could mean getting out in six or seven years with good behavior. They could do such time standing on their heads; they could hang tough. Toughness was John Gotti's middle name.

And Gotti was adding a touch of coolness. Heading for an appearance in a federal courtroom, he insisted a female radio reporter enter before him. "I was brought up to hold doors open for ladies," he said.

It was the same sort of elegance that Al Capone, up until then a firm believer in violence, developed after becoming top boss when Johnny Torrio bowed out in 1925.

Gotti faced intensive federal prosecutions in the late 1980s, and it seemed highly likely that the young mob boss would almost certainly be convicted and would have to be replaced, if only temporarily, by a new leader of the Gambino family. But it was soon evident that even from behind bars Gotti was not about to hold still for being replaced. Given Gotti and his supporters' propensity for violence, it remained doubtful as well that the other New York crime families would dare to interfere with the powerful Gambinos. As one insider is reputed to have said, "When the Gambinos spit, the other families drown."

That meant any real opposition would have to come from within the family, and no one seemed capable of moving on Gotti, or his handpicked caretakers—his brother Peter and a childhood buddy, Angelo Ruggerio—while he was imprisoned for his trial. Then in early 1987, shocking government attorneys, Gotti beat the rap.

Next an effort was made to convict Gotti on RICO (1970 Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act) charges. The lead prosecutor was Diane Giacalone, but her case was ill prepared and promised little chance of success, partially due to backbiting between the prosecutors and the FBI team investigating Gotti, members of which felt they could eventually produce a stronger case. Gotti and his cohorts were acquitted, and the mob leader's reputation was truly made. He became known as the "Teflon Don" against whom criminal charges simply could not be made to stick. It made grand press for Gotti, but his days were numbered.

The FBI produced a solid RICO case against him based on 100 hours of incriminating tapes. And they convinced Gotti's underboss, Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, to flip and testify against his chief. Gravano, who confessed to 19 murders, was out to save his own neck, and some criticized the government for granting him almost complete immunity, since Gotti was doomed on the tape evidence alone. However, it was obvious that the prosecution could not dare risk losing its case. A loss would probably leave Gotti free of any future prosecutions under RICO. Gravano's testimony thus was vital.

Gotti was convicted in 1992 and sentenced to life without parole. By the late 1990s it was unclear if Gotti would or even could continue to head the Gambino family from behind bars through his son. John Gotti Jr. was listed as acting boss of the family, but it was apparent that real power was gravitating to John J. D'Amico, a top Gambino capo and close friend of Gotti. Whether he remained a friend was open to question.

The doubts rose from the fact that cold-blooded analysis of the Gotti record proved disturbing to a number of Gambino family wise guys. In the short time before Gotti was tucked away in prison, the membership in the family had dropped from something over 250 to around 150. With Gotti at the head, the family had gained a reputation for dapperness, but Gotti's imposing presence on the TV nightly news exposed many of the capos and soldiers to discerning scrutiny by law enforcement officials. Gotti constantly ordered his men to come to the mob's Ravenite headquarters on Mulberry Street, even though the area was blanketed by FBI cameras. Many of the wise guys knew that quiet discretion and the shadows should have been the call; however, they dared not voice their fears to the boss and knew better than not to show up, since Gotti decreed and carried out the death sentence in such cases.

While all the mobsters hated Sammy "the Bull" Gravano for his ratting, they privately acknowledged the Bull's charge that Gotti's arrogance had done much to bring down the boss and their organization.

Law enforcement circles generally felt that Gotti and his son would become less major factors in the Gambino family. Indeed, crime would probably march on without the Gotti influence.

SEA-ME-WE-4 Submarine Cable:

ICT Policy 2002 demands BTTB to set up submarine cable connectivity to meet the ever increasing demand for broadband services and to meet requirement for growing use of telephones, internet etc.. BTTB took the opportunity of joining the SEA-ME-WE-4 consortium and a project to that end has been undertaken. As a signatory to the consortium BTTB is entrusted with all the tasks related to the submarine cable in the national and international level. It is hoped that, with the advent of SEA-ME-WE-4, use of bandwidth will increase sharply for international telecommunication because of the cheaper bandwidth cost. Submarine cable connectivity in Bangladesh will dramatically improve the volume and quality of data and voice communication, meet the increasing demand of international bandwidth. The delay factor in satellite communication which is a barrier for high speed data transfer will be eliminated. ICT usage and activities will be promoted.

Available capacity for BTTB in this cable is 468,000 MIU* Km which may have a maximum of 64 STM-1 (10 Gbps) at the landing station. MIU is Minimum investment Unit which is equivalent to one STM-1. Out of BTTB’s total capacity, 50,000 MIU* Km has already been contributed to the common pool of the consortium for sale. Sales and marketing of this bandwidth will be performed by the consortium in first two years time. The capacity of the cable will be enhanced further in different phases with minimal investment from BTTB. Minimum capacity unit for this cable is STM-1 i.e. BTTB has to utilize the capacity at STM-1 or multiple of that between any two landing stations.

though this comments were posted on newspapers and websites way long ago.but no one ever got to knw the real truth behind it. now isps they that bttb don;t hav backup to giv unintrupted service. bttb says the isp do illigal VOip business in dhaka and use the bandwidth in that way. the only suffers here r the the normal customer. the change this situation we need help from everybody. if we don;t think abt this matter seriously now then our ICT sector won;t get the status to compete with india and other countries. Internet is essential for a country to get into the mainstream of technology.the gov won't take any steps caz they r too busy with their election thing!! so this situation will remain in the dark for more couple of months.
